Marthinus Vermeulen

Marthinus Vermeulen is the Managing Partner and Founder of Consura Legal Consultancy.  With more than 20 years of legal experience, including 17 years as in-house counsel and over a decade of which as General Counsel to major energy and technology companies, Marthinus brings a rare combination of legal, commercial, and operational insight to complex energy projects.

Before founding Consura, Marthinus served as:

• General Counsel & Company Secretary at PXGEO
  He oversaw corporate secretarial functions, risk reviews, compliance, acquisitions, and contract negotiation for high-value projects.
   

• General Counsel at OiLSERV
  He established and led the Legal & Compliance function for over 10 years. He successfully negotiated major upstream oil & gas service agreements and Oil & Gas EPC contracts.
   

• Region General Counsel for Weatherford
  He led various high value upstream oil and gas service and supply agreement negotiations, the establishment of multiple subsidiaries and branches in various countries and managed all legal affairs across the Sub-Sahara Africa market, comprising of more than 10 active countries.
   

• Senior Legal Counsel at Huawei 
  He acted as company secretary and negotiating complex commercial and telecommunications infrastructure agreements across Southern Africa. He was also awarded the Huawei president award for best legal counsel during his tenure.

His early experience in private legal practice in South Africa provided a strong foundation in litigation, contracts, and intellectual property,  skills that have remained central to his in-house and executive legal work throughout his career.

Marthinus has been recognised as one of the Middle East’s leading corporate counsels, having been featured in the Legal 500 GC Powerlist (2019, 2022, 2023) and serving as a Judge for the Oath Middle East Legal Awards (2019–2024).

He holds LLM and LLB degrees in law from North-West University and an MBA (Oil & Gas) from Middlesex University. He was admitted as an Attorney and subsequently admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa. He is also a member of the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN).
